shadcn/ui alternatives for Next.js and Tailwind apps

shadcn/ui is the free, MIT base that most Next.js apps built with Cursor, v0 or Lovable start from. If you want a library with its own finished look, a package you update instead of code you own, a different primitive layer, or motion on top, these are worth a look. Several of them work beside shadcn/ui rather than instead of it.

What shadcn/ui does well

shadcn/ui gives you accessible components built with TypeScript, Tailwind CSS and Radix UI, added with its CLI so the code lands in your project and is yours to edit. It covers everyday parts like buttons, dialogs, forms, tables and a sidebar, plus blocks and charts, and its registry lets other libraries publish code for the same CLI. It is a great default for the base of an app.

Why people look at other options

  • You want a complete design system with a finished look and theming, not components you style yourself.
  • You would rather install a package and take updates from npm than own and maintain copied files.
  • You want a different accessibility layer under your components, like React Aria, Base UI or Ark UI.
  • Your app needs pieces that sit on top of the base: animated menus and dialogs, bigger app parts, or whole animated screens.

When qodesign is the better fit

Pick qodesign when you keep shadcn/ui as your base and want one screen to feel finished: an animated login, an OTP screen, a checkout or a tab bar. The pieces sit on top of a shadcn/ui project, come as React + TypeScript with Tailwind plus an HTML version, and include a PROMPT.md for Cursor, v0 or Lovable. You buy one piece at a time, and the free pieces install with the same shadcn CLI you already use.

Side by side with shadcn/ui: qodesign vs shadcn/ui.

Questions

What is the best alternative to shadcn/ui?
It depends on what you want instead. For a complete styled design system, HeroUI, Mantine or Chakra UI. For short Tailwind class names on any stack, daisyUI. For your own system on headless primitives, Radix UI (which shadcn/ui is built on), Base UI or React Aria.
Is there a shadcn/ui alternative that installs as a normal npm package?
Yes. HeroUI, Mantine, Chakra UI and Material UI install as packages and update through npm. daisyUI is a Tailwind plugin you add to your CSS.
Can I keep shadcn/ui and still get animated components?
Yes. Animate UI animates the shadcn/ui components you already have, Magic UI adds animated landing pieces, and qodesign adds whole animated app screens like logins and checkouts. All three work inside a shadcn/ui project.
Which option works best with Cursor, v0 or Lovable?
Apps from v0 and Lovable usually start on shadcn/ui, so anything that installs with the shadcn CLI fits those projects with no extra setup. HeroUI, Mantine and Chakra UI also publish llms.txt docs and MCP servers for AI editors.
